Babbitt Family Form Association

Big Gathering in Historical 

Hall---Officers Chosen and 

Addresses Made

   Babbitts and descendants of Babbitts representing a wide area of the United States gathered at Historical Hall this morning to meet one another, renew old acquaintances and make new ones.  It being the occasion of the first re-union of the descendants of Edward (Bobbitt) Babbitt, one of the early settlers of this country and who was killed by Indians at Berkley in early colonial days.  The beautiful day , the widespread interest, and the prospects of forming an association of a binding nature brought forth a delegation that filled the hall and aroused great interest.

   The meeting was called to order by W. W. Waterman of the Old Colonial Historical Society who called upon Rev. G. W. Christie, pastor of the Berkley church where so many of the local Babbitt family attend, to give the invocation.  This done the work of forming a temporary organization was begun at once.  Rollin H. Babbitt was chosen temporary chairman and Joshua Eddy Crane temporary secretary.

   On motion a committee of three was appointed to bring in a constitution and by-laws for the formation of the Babbitt family association.  This committee speedily reported and articles similar to those which have been adopted at previous family gatherings under the auspices of the Historical Society were brought in and adopted.

    The election of permanent officers was next in order.  C. J. Babbitt of New York was chosen president: Rollin H. Babbitt of Berkley, treasurer: and Mrs. Andrew Pierce of Taunton, secretary.

   The vice presidents chosen were Rollin H. Babbitt, Berkley: George R. Babbitt, Providence: Samuel F. Babbitt, Providence: John O. Babbitt, Dighton: Charles H. Babbitt, Washington: Braddock B. Babbitt, New York: Henry A. Babbitt, Montpelier, Vt.: Lewis F. Babbitt, Northampton: Robert A. Babbitt, Washington: Paul McKinstrey Babbitt, Cleveland, O.  The executive committee consist of Rollin H. Babbitt, George R. Babbitt, C. H. Babbitt, Zeno B. Babbitt, M. D., Samuel F. Babbitt, John O. Babbitt, George L. Randall, Mrs. H. L. Davis, Mrs. Edwin A. Dary, Mrs. Andrew J. Pierce, Miss Jenney E. Babbitt.

   A deeply interesting historical paper on Edward Bobbitt was read by James E. Seaver, and George L. Randall gave a very interesting talk on methods of compiling genealogical notes.  Brief addresses were also made by the president and secretary.

   Interesting papers and other matter bearing on the Babbitt genealogy were on exhibition at the hall and a lunch was served at noon by the ladies.  The meeting continued in the afternoon when various papers were given and addresses made, concerning which tomorrow's editions will deal.
